honey app review

The Honey App is a browser extension that makes it easy to find and use coupon codes to save money online.

Coupon codes offer an easy way to save money on digital purchases. But subscribing to merchant emails to get those codes is a great way to clutter your inbox and become tempted to buy unnecessarily.

The Honey app and browser extension make it easy to get high-quality coupon codes without the hassle. If you regularly shop online, it's a tool that you should be considering.

Here’s what you need to know about it.

What Is Honey?

Launched in 2012, Honey is a “coupon” aggregation service. PayPal acquired the company in 2019 and it continues to grow. Today, Honey scours more than 30,000 websites for coupon codes. It also allows mobile shoppers to find savings in more than 5,500 merchant locations. Honey operates in two main ways: as an app and as a browser extension. Both are designed to help users save money.

When a user installs the Honey browser extension, the extension automatically looks for coupon codes whenever the user browses on a partner site. When Honey finds a relevant code, the browser “lights up” (on Chrome it turns Green) and allows the user to apply codes.

The Honey mobile app is a related mobile shopping experience. It allows users to browse and buy from many of Honey’s merchant partners. The app finds and applies coupon codes whenever from the store.

What Does It Offer?

Honey’s main draw is the browser extension that serves up coupon codes at over 30,000 sites. However, the company has more to offer.

Free Browser Extension

Honey’s primary product is a free browser extension that searches for coupon codes. According to Honey, it can look for coupon codes at over 30,000 sites.

Many of these sites are Honey’s merchant partners. That means Honey earns a small commission when you purchase products from those sites.

Droplist

Droplist allows Honey users to identify items and stores to watch prices. When the price drops, Honey will alert you. As a longtime Honey user, I ignored this feature when it first came online.

However, during a recent home renovation, I found that this was exceedingly useful to track price drops on materials we needed to buy from Home Depot.

My only complaint about Droplist is that only 800 retailers are supported. That sounds like a lot, but a few major retailers didn’t make the cut (including IKEA).

Honey Gold

Occasionally, Honey offers “Honey Gold” to its members. This is a membership rewards program that can yield points for shopping at certain vendors. Honey Gold can be redeemed for gift cards or cash back through PayPal.

Honey app cash back

Honey also offers “exclusive offers” for certain products. If you buy these products through the Honey app or the browser extension, you’ll be eligible for a set Honey Gold bonus. These bonuses can be fairly lucrative such as "double cash back."

Amazon Best Price

Amazon can make it difficult to find the absolute best price on certain items. Retailers with lower prices may be hosted on Amazon Marketplace, but the preferred vendors get prime real estate. Honey aggregates information on Amazon to find the best price, regardless of the vendor’s status.

Honey Mobile App

Members can browse 5,500 retailers through the Honey mobile app (also called the Honey Smart Shopping Assistant). If you decide to buy, Honey can find the best coupon codes for you. The mobile app is somewhat limited compared to the browser extension, but it works.

Are There Any Fees?

Honey does not charge users any fees. It also doesn't sell personal information to companies. However, it may earn a small commission from a merchant partner when you use the browser extension.

How Does Honey Compare?

There are tons of deal and coupon aggregation sites, but Honey is my go-to browser extension for physical products. It's a non-invasive, easy-button way to save money.

Other sites like Rakuten and Capital One Shopping offer similar features and could be worth using as well. However, in my opinion, Honey is the absolute easiest-to-use coupon aggregator.

How Do I Open An Account?

Joining Honey is super easy to do. Simply visit the website and hit the Join button in the upper right-hand corner. Select which account you want to link (Google, Apple, PayPal, Facebook, or an email account). Once you do that, the browser syncs up, and you’re ready to go.

The app is equally easy. Users can download from either the App Store or the Google Play Store. Once downloaded, users can choose any account, and they are ready to start shopping.

Is It Safe And Secure?

Honey does not have access to your bank account and it does not store personal information about you. Honey can collect information about your browser behavior, but it doesn’t serve up ads to you. As a result, you’re unlikely to overbuy when using Honey.

Honey is not connected to your bank account, and you never connect credit cards or other financial information. Overall, Honey seems like a very safe app and browser extension.

How Do I Contact Honey?

Honey was built in Los Angeles, California, but now has 6 global offices.  The site has a “contact us” pop up in the lower right corner of the Help page.

If you have a question or problem, you can live chat with a team member or fill out a contact form. However, Honey does not advertise a customer service number or dedicated email address for customers seeking support.

Currently, Honey has a 2.9/5 rating on Trustpilot out of over 5,000 customer reviews.

Is It Worth It?

Honey is easy to join, non-invasive, and does truly help users to save money. Dedicated couponers may certainly be able to find better deals through other sites or by following specific retailers. However, Honey is one of the most effective and straightforward money-saving tools available today.
