Federal loan payments will start soon for $304 per month. I might be able to reduce the fed loan based on income, but not the Texas one as far as I can tell.

Typical – many countries have FREE HIGHER EDUCATION!!!!!!

I don’t like using terms like scummy because debt isn’t a moral issue – it’s a financial issue. I think you should work as a team (i.e. plan the best path together). For example, get your mom on the lowest income-driven plan possible, make the required payments (hopefully they are low), and then she would get loan forgiveness on any remaining balance at the end of the repayment term for IDR forgiveness. The benefit of her not making much money is that income-driven repayment, even on ICR, could see a substantially low payment and you can assist with that.

To think there are even people out there that would take advantage of their parents and ditch their loans on them. My mom took out the loan and I agreed to pay it off, no way would I be scummy enough to back out on that. I would never do that to her so basically I am screwed and not getting that forgiven. I should get 20k of my 30k forgiven from Bidens forgiveness thing (assuming that actually happens) which leaves me just at 10k, but unfortunately my mom and I were misled when I was younger as we both didn’t understand how college worked or that you didn’t actually need to spend 130K to get a degree. My mom is only a part time bus driver (hard to be a full time bus driver and make rent) so she wont qualify for PSLF. I guess our only option is to consolidate then.

Yes I work for non-profit, made over 120 payments, many of which were income driven. I started to apply for PSLF about November last year when I first heard about. NelNet transferred my loan to Mohela, I guessed, a loan servicer contracted for student loan forgiveness. Several months later, with many email notices, I got a letter said my loan was forgiven. It can be done!
