All of the debate about student loans seems to forget about what the loans bought. And I wonder if next people are going to be clamoring for mortgage forgiveness too because those payments also suck. Of course, like you point out, it’s worth being smart about the return on investment and not going too crazy, and perhaps we could do a better job as a country of making sure students don’t get in over their heads.

If you’re not in default, you simply contact your loan servicer or do it online at StudentAid.gov.

If you’re in default, you need to ask for rehabilitation from the collection agency handling your debt.
