I chair the board of trustees at a community college and I think we provide the best educational bargain there is. Most of our students go to college for free or nearly for free as Pell grants and scholarships are pretty easy to obtain. We have two year programs that local industry helped create so that graduates can walk out of our college with an associates degree and walk straight into high paying jobs. Of course many others just transfer to four year schools and often can graduate with a bachelor’s degree in only three total years because they got so many college credit hours as high school students. The other thing we specialize in is helping first generation college students, and that’s a real thing. College is a scary and foreign place if you are the first of your family and friends to attend, and because of that we have robust engagement and support systems. We feel helping nontraditional students succeed is a mission, something vitally important to eliminate generational poverty in a country as rich as ours. I appreciate you pointing out that community colleges are a great option for many students.
