Seems like she’s likely providing over 50% support (rent alone is probably enough) and you’re a student, so assuming you’re full time, she can claim you.

My abusive mother whom I live with wants to claim me on her taxes. She only covers rent and select utilities, leaving me to pay for my own food and phone bill. Is that enough for me to be able to claim myself? And should I even do that?

You simply file your own tax return (might have to do it on paper), and then the IRS will sort it out and come after her. I’d strongly suggest calling or emailing her first, because the IRS will take action against her – from fixing the return to potentially more. Maybe a little scare tactic up front can resolve it.

However, my mom is still claiming me on her taxes. I’m not sure what to do considering she is able to file before I can due to the military having a set date for w-2’s to be released. She is also not going to take me off her file and will even go as far as lying to me saying she did. I am not sure what to do.

It doesn’t sound like it given your age and living situation.
