What Is TaskRabbit?

TaskRabbit is a platform that connects busy people with people who are willing do their tasks, called taskers. Common tasks are cleaning, lawncare, home repairs, moving, or putting furniture together. But you can also get creative with tasks. You can walk dogs, wait in line, wrap gifts, baby proof a house, etc.

The company launched back in 2008, originally under the name RunMyErrand. The company was then acquired by IKEA in 2017.

During the company’s tenure, taskers have spent 350,000 hours running errands, waited in line for over 10,000 hours, mounted over 16,000 TVs, rushed two passports to the airport, and swept over 6,500 miles.

What Does It Offer?

TaskRabbit matches people looking to outsource a task to people with the time and skills to make it happen. Let’s take a closer look at what the platform has to offer.

Connect To A Range Of Tasks

When you want to start a side hustle, one of the biggest obstacles is finding paying clients. TaskRabbit helps you bypass that hurdle by connecting you with plenty of potential gigs.

When you become a tasker, you can offer services in over 50 categories to potential customers. Some of the categories you can offer to help with include furniture assembly, cleaning, room measurement, minor home repairs, babyproofing, plumbing help, smart home installation, wall mounting, moving, packing, power washing, painting indoors, errands, pet sitting, photography, graphic design, sewing, office administration, data entry, cooking, interior design, laundry, and more.

The types of tasks you choose to offer should match up with your skill set. For example, you shouldn’t offer plumbing help unless you have the appropriate credentials. But TaskRabbit allows you to complete a range of tasks that you might not need lengthy experience with, like waiting in line or running errands.

Set Your Own Rates And Hours

TaskRabbit allows you to set your own hours and rates. After you are on the platform, you can set a schedule and draw a map of your work area. You have the option to update your availability each week to flow with your other responsibilities.

In addition to setting your own hours, you can set your own rates on TaskRabbit. Of course, it’s often helpful to take a look at what others are charging for similar tasks. It’s useful to remain competitive with others in your area. But ultimately, you’ll have the final say on how much to charge.

Availability

As of writing, TaskRabbit is available across nine countries. But within the United States, TaskRabbit operates in a range of cities. You’ll need to live in a city that TaskRabbit supports in order to become a tasker.

Some of the cities supported by TaskRabbit include Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Austin, Boston, Denver, Dallas, Miami, New York City, San Diego, San Antonio, Seattle, Sacramento, Las Vegas, Raleigh, Charlotte, Orlando, Columbus, Milwaukee, Cleveland, Tulsa, Corpus Christi, Boise, Baton Rouge, and more.

The wide range of cities means it’s somewhat likely you’ll be able to work with TaskRabbit, assuming you live in a larger city.

Straightforward Payment

When you complete a task, it’s easy to submit an invoice. Once the client pays through the app, you’ll receive a direct deposit to your linked checking account. If a client wants to tip you or reimburse your expenses, they can do that directly through the app.

Are There Any Fees?

In order to get up and running, you’ll need to pay a $25 registration fee. After that initial fee, you won’t face any other fees. When you do a job, you’ll get to keep 100% of the rate you set and any tips that a customer sends your way. The customer pays an additional fee directly to TaskRabbit based on the price of their service.

When you earn money with TaskRabbit, it’s important to set aside enough to cover your tax bill. Otherwise you could be in for an uncomfortable surprise from the IRS at the end of the year.

How Does TaskRabbit Compare?

TaskRabbit isn’t the only platform connecting people who need help to side hustlers. Here’s how it stacks up.

Handy matches homeowners to workers with the right building qualifications. In general, Handy requires paid work experience before you can offer a service through their platform. If you work with Handy, the payment structure is a bit more complex. You won’t set your own rates, instead, your hourly rate will be set based on your experience, location, timeline, and the number of jobs you complete through the platform.

Thumbtack, a lead generation platform for home improvement professionals, is another option. It’s geared towards contractors with professional qualifications. If you have extensive qualifications for home improvement, Thumbtack might be a better fit. But if you are looking to earn extra money for completing short-term projects and tasks that don’t require an extensive skill set, then TaskRabbit might be the right choice.

How Do I Open An Account?

If you want to work with TaskRabbit, you’ll start by creating an account on the website with your name, email address, and password. From there, you’ll download the Tasker app to your mobile device to continue the process.

Be prepared to provide information about what services you want to provide, your location, and any supporting documents. Also, you’ll need to need the following qualifications:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have a Social Security number
  • Be eligible to work in an available city
  • Pass a background check
  • Have a valid credit card
  • Have an active checking account
  • Own a smartphone with the capacity to support the TaskRabbit app

In most cities, you’ll need to pay a $25 registration fee before setting your schedule availability. Once your profile is approved, you can start getting jobs. It should take less than four business days for your registration to be approved.

Is It Safe And Secure?

TaskRabbit is a long-running platform that makes an effort to protect your financial information. But the physical nature of completing tasks could leave you vulnerable. It’s always a good idea to trust your gut when completing jobs. If you don’t feel safe in a situation, don’t hesitate to leave and let TaskRabbit know.

Also, TaskRabbit doesn’t offer insurance coverage to taskers. If you are working in someone else’s home, it’s usually a good idea to get personal insurance coverage to protect yourself.

How Do I Contact TaskRabbit?

If you need to get in touch with TaskRabbit, you can call 1-647-697-3317, send an email, or reach out over live chat. Based on the company’s 4.3 out of 5 star Trustpilot rating in North America, you should expect a positive experience.

Is It Worth It?

For many, TaskRabbit offers a straightforward side hustle opportunity. If you want to build a side hustle, using the built-in network of people looking for help on TaskRabbit could jumpstart your earning potential.

Of course, TaskRabbit comes with a lot of competition from other side hustlers. Depending on your situation, TaskRabbit might be a good starting point for your business endeavors. But you may want to include TaskRabbit as a part of your side hustle plans instead of as the entire plan. For example, you could find clients through other platforms or build a website to advertise your services.
