Hello, thank you for the shoutout! Yes, assuming the HSA is held with a custodian that allows alternative assets, one can self-direct their HSA in alternatives. Equity Trust Company can assist with the custody of an HSA holding alternative assets.

You assign a beneficiary. If the beneficiary is a surviving spoouse, no taxes and nothing really happens. If it’s a non-spouse, the beneficiary has one year to use the funds to pay for any of the original owner’s medical expenses tax-free, then it becomes their money (and they do pay tax on it).
