What Is Varsity Tutors?

Varsity Tutors is an online learning platform that provides students with access to a comprehensive network of vetted tutors. In the 15 years since Varsity Tutors opened its doors, the company has facilitated over 10 million hours of live instruction to students in over 3,000 subjects.

What Does It Offer?

Let’s take a closer look at what Varsity Tutors has to offer.

Various Tutoring Options

Varsity Tutors connects students with a large network of vetted tutors. As a student, you can tap into personalized one-on-one tutoring to help you master the subject at hand. The vast network of tutors means you can get help instantly.

Depending on your situation, you can choose to work with a tutor in-person or virtually. In addition to personal sessions, students can access 24/7 support through a tutor chat.

Some students don’t need one-on-one help. If you prefer, you can choose to access live small-group classes and on-demand lessons to beef up your knowledge base.

Thousands Of Subjects Covered

Varsity Tutors offers support in over 3,000 subjects. These subjects cover academic classes, test prep, language learning, and enrichment.

While help with academic coursework and language learning is self-explanatory, enrichment classes can cover private lessons in everything from coding to ecology. If a subject sparks your interest, Varsity Tutors can help you explore it further.

In terms of test prep, Varsity Tutors offers help for common standardized tests like the SAT and ACT. But students can also get support for AP exams, the GMAT, and real estate licensing exams.

Vetted Tutors

Varsity Tutors has a big network of tutors. But that doesn’t mean the company isn’t selective. In fact, only 10% of applicants are accepted to become tutors with Varsity Tutors. This helps to ensure that Varsity's tutors truly know their stuff.

Are There Any Fees?

While Varsity Tutors offers some free resources, like practice tests and flashcards, the bulk of the company’s offerings require a membership. Unfortunately, the exact cost of your membership varies based on your location and the types of services you are looking for.

But here’s a sampling of costs I found for a high school student who needs academic help:

  • 2 hours of expert tutoring per month costs $199 per month.
  • 4 hours of expert tutoring per month costs $329 per month.
  • 8 hours of expert tutoring per month costs $579 per month.

In addition to the live tutoring, each level comes with unlimited live classes, on-demand homework help, access to Codeverse, and access for your entire family.

The ongoing monthly cost will vary based on your student’s needs.

How Does Varsity Tutors Compare?

Varsity Tutors isn’t the only company offering support for students. Here are some Varsity Tutors alternatives you might want to consider:

Sylvan Learning Centers offer tutoring support for students in K to 12. Like Varsity Tutors, Sylvan offers both in-person and online tutoring for students. The cost of working with Sylvan is a bit more murky because the it varies based on the student’s location, and you must contact a Sylvan Learning Center in your area for a quote.

Khan Academy is a budget-friendly option worth considering. It offers free academic support for students to access online. While Khan Academy doesn’t come with live help or one-on-one tutoring, the free educational videos can be helpful for students.

How Do I Open An Account?

If you want to open an account with Varsity Tutors, you can either call the company at 888-888-0446 or explore your membership options online. In either case, you’ll be able to choose from different membership options. If you decide to move forward, students will have access to the resources immediately.

Is It Safe And Secure?

According to the company’s privacy policy, Varsity Tutors’s system is set up to protect children’s personal information. The website doesn’t collect, retain, or sell any personal information about students.

How Do I Contact Varsity Tutors?

If you want to get in touch with Varsity Tutors, you can call 888-888-0446. Since the company has earned thousands of five-star reviews through Trustpilot, you should expect a generally positive experience with Varsity Tutors.

Who Is This For And Is It Worth It?

Students who want academic support in any number of subjects or help to prepare for standardized tests might find exactly what they are looking for through Varsity Tutors. The company offers ample resources to improve your understanding of key topics, which can help you improve your grades and your test scores.

The downside is that working with Varsity Tutors can get expensive. If you aren’t ready to pay for an expensive program, turning to free resources like those offered by Khan Academy might be a better place to start. You can always choose to pay for tutoring help if you decide that one-on-one support would be helpful.
