What comes after that? Do we just keep forgiving student loans forever? Or will there be an arbitrary date that separates the winners of student loan forgiveness from all the losers that take out loans after that date? What will prevent colleges from jacking up prices astronomically (as they have been) because they know that a) people can take out almost unlimited student loans; and b) the government will just swoop in and forgive the loans with taxpayer money? Everything I’ve heard so far sounds like student loan forgiveness is just a band aid that does nothing to get to the root of the problem.

Late to the conversation, but here’s my take. While I understand your opinion on the matter, have you also considered that some individuals don’t have the opportunity to attend college right out of high school and must enter the workforce or are already in the workforce due to necessity. Not everyone who wants to go to college can afford to, even community colleges and trade schools still cost money, which would be too much for this situation. Also, consider individuals that tried attending college but were then met with exclusions from aid or loans for being a part-time student, for a myriad of reasons, such as having to work, or provide care. It’s common knowledge that college tuition is rising at a breakneck speed relative to inflation. If one has to stop attending college to take on more work, and then makes plans to return to school, the costs are much more to that individual, which I believe is adding to the student loan debt crisis. Lastly, also consider that not all who want to attend college have the luxury of having a parent or parents to pay for it, such as those who are homeless, or in foster care etcetera. In my experience, the majority of these students come from really complex circumstances that require nuanced solutions.

I agree. There has not been any conversation regarding the amount that colleges and universities charge. This entire situation has been an attempt by the current administration to buy votes. Some statistics say there are about 49 million individuals with student loans outstanding. That is quite a large voting block that could be bought with these proposals.
The current administration does not want to ruffle any feathers at the colleges and universities regarding the cost of the education because the employees tend to vote their party. The democrats have been after the drug companies for years about the price of drugs. They aren’t saying anything about the price of education.
The individuals with the debt have to be responsible for their choices. If they have to forgo spending their net pay on other things until they have paid their debt, that’s what they need to learn. I don’t believe many of the estimated 49 million debtors are living on the street.

You can read all about their methodology for getting a representative sample on their site. We selected 2,000 participants to make sure that the margin of error was small.

There were respondents from every state and income level.

Ok, then how did Pollfish recruit the polling sample? Opt-in surveys are notoriously skewed because the intrinsic nature of the self-selected sample. What locations of the country were used? Arguably, a 35 year old female making $50,000 in NYC could possibly have a differing opinion from a 35 year old female making $50,000 in Topeka, Kansas.
